Student Visa Extension Process in Australia: Timing, Evidence and What Triggers a Refusal
A student visa cannot be extended. Here is how a new application works, the six in-Australia exemptions, and what invites closer scrutiny.
If you have not sorted this out yet, our guide to how to build Genuine Student evidence that holds up is the place to start; what a course change does to your visa covers the related groundwork.
What to lodge instead of an extension
Create or log in to ImmiAccount, complete the online application, attach supporting documents, and pay the Visa Application Charge. The Department of Home Affairs will not process the application until payment is made. Applications lodged before 14 November 2025 fall under Ministerial Direction 111. Later applications fall under Ministerial Direction 115.
Timing and status while the application is pending
Lodge well before course commencement and include all supporting documentation. Processing times vary with application complexity, document completeness, requests for further information, external checks and policy changes. Leaving Australia does not end consideration of an application lodged there, but your visa must permit return. A Bridging visa A ceases when you leave. Substantial travel reasons may require a Bridging visa B.
Six exemptions for applying in Australia
- Exemption 1: You need up to 12 additional months to finish your main course.
- Exemption 2: The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or Defence sponsors you.
- Exemption 3: You are applying for a Doctoral Degree, not a Master’s by Research.
- Exemption 4: You are applying for primary or secondary school study.
- Exemption 5: You finished your main course and will undertake another course.
- Exemption 6: Your education provider has defaulted, preventing continuation.
These exemptions apply only to a primary Student visa holder. Dependent or secondary Student visa holders cannot apply in Australia as the primary applicant.
Signals that invite closer scrutiny
The Department of Home Affairs examines whether studying in Australia remains the primary reason for the visa under the Genuine Student requirement. Course changes, research-topic changes, early completion or deferred study require scrutiny of your circumstances. Check visa conditions through VEVO before changing your study. An invalid in-Australia application may affect status and block a further application after expiry. These circumstances do not automatically cause refusal.
FAQ
Can I extend my Australian Student visa?
No. You must lodge an application for a new Student visa if you want to continue studying. Most applications must be made from outside Australia.
Can I apply for another Student visa from Australia?
Only eligible primary Student visa holders meeting an exemption may do so. Dependants and secondary Student visa holders cannot apply as primary applicants while in Australia.
Does leaving Australia stop processing?
No, but you must be legally able to return. A Bridging visa A ceases when you travel. A Bridging visa B may enable return where substantial travel reasons apply.
What may delay processing?
Missing documents, slow responses to requests and complex applications can affect timing. External information and policy changes can also influence the process. The published processing guide is indicative, not a decision for your application.
What should I do if my visa expires before graduation?
Check whether another visa category fits your circumstances. The Department of Home Affairs identifies a visitor visa as one possible pathway. You will need an education-provider letter stating your graduation date.
