Australian Student Visa Processing Times: What the Wait Actually Depends On

The Student median is 22 days, but it is a category figure, not a promise. What moves an application, and where to check the current number.

If you have not sorted this out yet, our guide to planning your arrival around an uncertain decision date is the place to start; what to do about housing while a visa is pending covers the related groundwork.

What the official median measures

The Department of Home Affairs describes the median as the most accurate way to show how long most visa applications are taking to be finalised. Its August 2026 Temporary Visa Program table lists Student applications at 22 Days. This category can include different visas, and some may take longer. The figures are updated regularly, so they describe past processing patterns rather than a fixed service standard.

What can move an application backwards

The Department identifies these factors:

  • Missing or incomplete supporting documents.
  • Lodging a paper application rather than applying online.
  • Slow responses to requests for further information.
  • Delays receiving information from external agencies.
  • Complexity within the application.
  • Changes in the number of applications received.
  • Changes to Ministerial Directions.
  • Increased work on older applications.

Health, character and national security requirements can involve external agencies. Student applications lodged outside Australia follow the applicable Ministerial Direction. Applications lodged before 14 November 2025 follow Ministerial Direction 111. Applications lodged on or after that date follow Ministerial Direction 115.

Where to check the current figure

Use the Department of Home Affairs visa processing time guide tool. Select your visa type, stream and application date. The tool displays processing times for recently decided applications.

The Department recommends lodging well before course commencement with all supporting documentation.

Why flights and housing need caution

A median is not an application-specific deadline. It does not account for document requests, external checks, application complexity or delays affecting older cases. It is also not a visa decision or a promise of approval.

Do not treat 22 Days as a confirmed travel date. Arrange flights and housing with flexibility while your application remains under assessment. Check ImmiAccount for requests from the Department. Home Affairs cannot provide status updates while an application is within standard processing timeframes.

FAQ

Does the 22-day median mean my application will be finalised in 22 days?
No. It is a category median based on recent decision data. Your application may take less or more time.

Does the processing time guide predict my personal result?
No. It shows processing times for recently decided applications. It does not consider your personal details.

Why did the Department change the ministerial direction boundary?
The Department applies Ministerial Direction 111 to relevant applications lodged before 14 November 2025. It applies Ministerial Direction 115 to those lodged on or after that date.

Can I receive a status update during normal processing?
Home Affairs does not provide status updates while an application is within standard processing timeframes. You should check ImmiAccount for any requests for further information.

Should I wait for a decision before arranging accommodation?
The median is not an individual decision date. A flexible arrangement is safer because requests for information and external checks can affect finalisation.
