Applying onshore for an ANU Pathway Diploma: UAC or direct?
Onshore applicants completing Australian Year 12, the IB or NCEA Level 3 apply through UAC; other international applicants apply directly through ANU Application Manager / Studylink.
If you are applying onshore and completing Australian Year 12, the International Baccalaureate (IB) or NCEA Level 3, apply for an ANU Pathway Diploma through UAC. Other international applicants apply directly through ANU Application Manager / Studylink. Your current qualification matters when choosing the application channel; being in Australia does not automatically put you in the UAC group.
Which application channel fits your qualification?
| Your situation | Application channel |
|---|---|
| You are onshore and completing Australian Year 12, the IB or NCEA Level 3 | UAC |
| You are an international applicant outside that group | Direct through ANU Application Manager / Studylink |
For example, an international student completing Australian Year 12 in Australia falls within the UAC group. An international applicant in Australia applying with a graded AQF Certificate IV falls within the direct application group.
Before preparing an application, identify the qualification you will use for admission and whether you are still completing it. Keep your applicant category clear: the direct route described here applies to international applicants outside the specified UAC group.
Does the Diploma fit your entry profile?
ANU Pathway Diplomas have a minimum selection rank of 70 and are intended for applicants with a selection rank of 70–79.99. Students with a selection rank of 80 or above should apply for a Bachelor degree and cannot commence a Pathway Diploma.
The Diploma admission options also include a graded AQF Certificate IV. There are no subject prerequisites for Diploma entry, and adjustment factors do not apply.
The direct English entry requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0, or an equivalent result. This is the same English requirement as ANU undergraduate entry.
Choosing UAC or direct application identifies where to submit your application. It does not establish that you meet the admission requirements.
Choose the Bachelor destination before the Diploma
The Diploma is an AQF Level 5 qualification, but it cannot be taken with a standalone, one-year study intention. It must be packaged with a Bachelor degree, with financial capacity for the Diploma and Bachelor sequence.
ANU offers these aligned pathways:
| Pathway Diploma | Aligned Bachelor degrees and required Diploma GPA |
|---|---|
| Diploma of Business and Economics | Accounting, Business Administration, Commerce, Economics or Finance — 4.0 |
| Diploma of Computing | Computing — 4.0 |
| Diploma of Politics and International Relations | Asian Studies — 4.0; International Relations, International Security Studies, Political Science or Public Policy — 4.6 |
Articulation into an aligned Bachelor carries one year of credit, equivalent to 48 units, subject to meeting the applicable progression requirements.
You may apply for a non-aligned Bachelor after the Diploma. That application is assessed as an application from a student with one year of undergraduate study at ANU. Credit is assessed case by case, so a full year of credit is not guaranteed when changing programs.
Plan for on-campus study and the full study sequence
The Diploma takes 12 months full-time, across two semesters and eight courses. Teaching is in person at ANU Acton Campus in Canberra, with no remote option. The current intake is Semester 1 only.
Students take ESEN1001 Academic Skills for University Study alongside first-year courses shared with Bachelor students. Delivery is through a wholly ANU-owned Pathways entity, and students are full ANU students from commencement.
For 2027, indicative annual tuition is AUD 57,640 for each Pathway Diploma. This is the Diploma’s indicative annual tuition, not the total cost of the Diploma and Bachelor sequence.
The packaged arrangement provides one Confirmation of Enrolment for the Diploma and one for the Bachelor, supporting one visa application. The stated international application deadline for Semester 1, 2027 is 15 December.
Prepare the details that determine your application
- Identify your admission qualification.
- Select UAC or direct application using the qualification categories above.
- Choose your intended Bachelor degree.
- Match that degree to its aligned Diploma.
- Record the required progression GPA.
- Prepare evidence of your academic results.
- Prepare evidence of your English proficiency.
- Plan funding for the Diploma and Bachelor sequence.
The key decision is straightforward: onshore applicants completing Australian Year 12, the IB or NCEA Level 3 use UAC; other international applicants use the direct route. The next decision is whether the Diploma’s entry profile and aligned Bachelor destination fit your study plan.
